About Zheravna
Zheravna is a village in central eastern Bulgaria, part of Kotel municipality, Sliven Province. The village, set in a small valley at the southern foot of the eastern Balkan Mountains, is an architectural reserve of national importance consisting of more than 200 wooden houses from the Bulgarian National Revival period (18th and 19th century).
The village emerged between the 12th and 14th century and grew to become a cultural and handicraft centre in the 18th century. As the local population came to wealth, the architectural appearance of the village was shaped by one- or two-storey wooden houses surrounded by stone walls and cobblestone alleys.
Language and cultural programme
The goals of the programme are to create a safe, supportive and fun environment where you will be encouraged to let go of everything that stands in your way of communicating freely in Bulgarian and truly immerse yourself. For this purpose, we will be using the premises of a renovated authentic house, which will become our Bulgarian home for one week.
We will be aiming at creating authentic and holistic experiences where you will be involved in all aspects of the daily life. We will be helping each other, we will be cooking together, we will be working on projects together and we will be exploring Bulgarian culture, arts, music, history and, of course, language.
The language and cultural programme is guided by 4 essential principles:
- Speak Bulgarian at all times.
It may be your first week in Bulgaria or you may have lived in the country for many years; you may be a complete beginner or an advanced speaker: we will all speak ONLY Bulgarian. This way we will activate your survival mechanisms and thus inspire your motivation to learn. Do not forget that you will succeed because you will be doing this in a supportive and safe environment.
- Help each other.
Starting from day one, we will be working on creating a community-like setting where people have the freedom to be themselves and the support to learn, experiment and explore in their own ways. It goes without saying that respecting everyone regardless of their age, culture, nationality and religion is the key to creating such a community.
- Stay open.
We are well aware that learning a foreign language is no easy task but as soon as you believe you can do it and give it a proper try, the process will get more fun and a lot easier. We ask of you to remain open to all opportunities you will have during the summer school and do not give up when it gets challenging – this is when you will have a real chance of stretching yourself, improving your language skills and gaining more confidence.
- Enjoy yourself.
Last but not least, this is your holiday. It may be a lot more active than the usual eating and chilling but it is really important that you remember you can take time off and sit out an activity or suggest another one if this is what you need at that moment. The more fun you have, the easier it will be for you to use Bulgarian.
